the interest in exploring silhouettes was sparked by a documentary I was watching on ancient Egypt. I found myself fascinated by how we've BEEN ABLE TO translate hieroglyphics and TO discover their meanings thousands of years after they're INITIALLY MADE. OR how beliefs back then have upheld, evolved, or deteriorated over time. I realized that symbols have always been the most prominent language in the world, able to connect people from far away places and over periods measurable in cosmic time. symbols are a condensed version of a much broader idea that through repetition and placement create a bridge from the outside world to our minds. more particularly, to the subconscious. creating these pieces is an exercise in accessing the subconscious. I look at the material I'm going to use and whatever image I associate with that material is how I determine what symbol I m going to create. I then extrapolate on that symbol and create a version of it that can be identified by a majority of people versed in pop culture. for example. I came across some old costume jewelry in my shed right next to a big jar of foreign coins from all over the world, perfect! I think money and wealth, I think greed, I think theft, I think excess, I think pirate, I think jack sparrow, jackpot(no pun intended)! Some of the images come to me quickly, others, take a little more time, but I always know when I see the image I'm going to create. it's an ah-hah moment. sometimes the process is reversed where i'll have the image in my mind first and need to pick a material to use. since a lot of our subconscious is formed during childhood, I chose to use themes that were relevant during mine. I also choose images from popular films because it is my belief that movies are one of the most influential vehicles for effecting and planting ideas into the subconscious.
IT HAS BEEN A VERY EXCITING PROCESS FOR ME TO CREATE THIS SERIES AS WITH EACH PIECE I DO, I FEEL AS THOUGH ANY CREATIVE RESTRCITIONS I PLACE ON MYSELF GET LIFTED AND MY TECHNIQUE AND EXECUTION CONTINUOUSLY EVOLVE. I M ATTEMTPING TO SYMBOLICALLY AND LITERALLY CREATE A 4 TH DIMENSION BY ADDING FORM AND DEPTH TO A 2 DIMENSIONAL IMAGE ALL WHILE FOLLOWING THE RULES AND LAWS OF THAT 2D SPACE. WHAT MAKES IT REALLY FUN IS THAT BECAUSE I AM CREATING THIS NEW DIMENSION I CAN DICTATE THE RULES OF WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESNT. GUESS WHAT, I DON T LIKE RULES SO THERE ARE NONE. IN THE WISE WORDS OF ALICE COOPER "SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER."
